Background of the study
Infrastructural development is a key driver of socio-economic transformation, influencing migration patterns between rural and urban areas. In Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, recent investments in roads, housing, and public utilities have altered traditional migration dynamics. Improved infrastructure can stimulate urbanization by attracting rural inhabitants seeking better opportunities (Eze, 2023). However, this rapid urbanization poses challenges, including overcrowding, pressure on public services, and changes in rural economies. The study examines how infrastructural development influences rural-urban migration, investigating the push-pull factors that determine migration decisions. It critically analyzes the socio-economic implications of migration and the resultant urban expansion. Moreover, it explores the extent to which infrastructure investments have facilitated sustainable urban growth, addressing both the opportunities and challenges associated with these developments (Nwachukwu, 2024; Ibekwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Rapid infrastructural development in Nkanu East has led to significant rural-urban migration, which in turn places strain on urban services and disrupts rural communities. The study aims to understand the causes and consequences of this migration pattern to inform sustainable planning (Eze, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the impact of infrastructural development on migration patterns.

  • To assess the socio-economic effects of rural-urban migration.

  • To recommend policies for balanced regional development.

Research questions

  • How does infrastructural development influence rural-urban migration in Nkanu East?

  • What are the socio-economic impacts of this migration?

  • What strategies can ensure sustainable urban and rural development?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Infrastructural development significantly increases rural-urban migration.

  • H2: There is a negative impact of migration on rural socio-economic stability.

  • H3: Balanced infrastructure investments can mitigate adverse migration effects.

Significance of the study
This study highlights the complex relationship between infrastructure and migration, offering insights for policymakers to design sustainable development strategies that balance urban growth and rural stability (Nwachukwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining the relationship between infrastructural development and rural-urban migration in Nkanu East Local Government Area, focusing solely on migration dynamics and socio-economic impacts.

Definitions of terms

  • Infrastructural Development: Investments in public facilities and services that support socio-economic activities.

  • Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural areas to urban centers.

  • Socio-economic Stability: The balanced state of social and economic conditions within a community.
